Phone restriction for a detainee

Impure Blood

The one allowed phone call is a custody restriction that becomes an operational opening in the investigation. An arrested DCRI operative uses his permitted call to receive orders, then turns the false identity trail laid for him into a way of observing the police from inside custody.

The Call as a Point of Access

The operative explains that his instructions came through his one permitted phone call, a limit he treats not as an obstacle but as an opportunity. He pointedly suggests that the police should monitor such calls, exposing the gap between a procedural safeguard and the assumptions investigators make about how it can be used.

From Arrest to Plan B

The call sets a new phase in motion. With Plan A no longer viable, the operative describes his escape as part of the revised assignment. His arrest, rather than ending his usefulness, gives him a chance to see what the police are doing from within their own operation.

Intelligence from the False Trail

The DCRI lays a false identity trail, and the operative follows it. He is still preparing his report, but says Commandant Lanvalle has already found it interesting. The restriction therefore connects a brief, controlled communication to a larger intelligence maneuver: the permitted call delivers the order, while the misleading trail supplies the material for a report from inside the investigation.
